“I find interest in things that become unfamiliar when looked at for a long time. This gives me a freedom that is far removed from conventional sight.”

Max Uhlig

Paintings &
watercolours

Dense, vibrating dots, dancing meshes of lines, glowing colour. Large formats. Max Uhlig’s paintings are immediate, condensing all previous experience into the now. He paints what he sees in front of him, seeking confrontation with the object – and in doing so achieves intimacy and intensity.

Drawings &
prints

Lines in black ink. Expressive brush strokes, entwined in dynamic rhythm, that feel their way towards the image they themselves create – the roots of Max Uhlig’s work can be traced back to drawings and prints in which form and gesture take shape.

Painting &
glass

Vine-like lines ascend the glass, with even the frames of the Gothic chancel windows barely able to contain the grisailles. They are counterpointed by the vibrancy and force of the fiery and earthy tones on the light-flooded windows of the south façade – it is here, at the Johanniskirche in Magdeburg, that Max Uhlig has created his magnum opus.

Biography

Max Uhlig is a painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. He ranks as one of Germany’s most important contemporary artists – and one of the few still devoted to plein air painting. Born in Dresden in 1937, and having remained in the city to this day, Max Uhlig has never bowed to an aesthetic or art-political diktat. The GDR was a difficult environment for artists, yet Uhlig stood resolutely by his creative principles throughout. After the Wall fell, Max Uhlig established himself in the international art world and was Professor of Painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden. He is the recipient of numerous national and international prizes and his work is represented at museums and in collections throughout the world.
